Dave Gahan
Our own personal jesus
Other Stage - Sunday
It was always going to be a tricky gig for Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan. He’s fronted the eighties synth popsters-turned stadium rockers for over 20 years. This year sees him release his debut solo album, Paper Monsters, which he’s co-written and which is surprisingly good. This is the first time he’s written – DM’s Martin Gore writes all the Depeche songs, and Dave had to get his set list just right for the Glasto crowds, proving himself as a solo artist.
Thankfully for the faithful Mode devotees, Dave sprinkled his solo songs with some old favourites, although new tracks like recent single Dirty Sticky Floors and Black and Blue went down a treat. But with a touch of rain and Dave looking like the uber-god from the Songs of Faith and Devotion era, shirt soon swiftly removed, the biggest cheers were saved for A Question of Time, Walking in my Shoes, Never Let Me Down Again, Personal Jesus and I Feel You.
The new material will take a little time to grow on us, but for now, Dave Gahan charmed us all with a truly epic and energetic set.
