The Kidz Field 2003
This information relates to Glastonbury Festival 2003
Unbelievably, in this age of wealth creation it is still free for young people under the age of twelve to come into the festival. They must bring at least one adult to tag along with them in case of emergency but that is the only rule. Once inside the grounds there is a massive amount of things to keep them happily occupied for the duration. Glastonbury offers an enormous variety of extraordinary facilities and wonderful entertainments designed specifically with young people in mind. In the Green Fields, the aptly titled Green Kids area is a blissful nook where environmentally friendly play and creativity is emphasised and children are encouraged to take home something they have made from the mass of recycled and natural materials available in several different workshops. Around the whole site there is a constant stream of living theatre to see between fields and a plentiful supply of suitable-for-all shows in the theatre marquee, the circus field, the big top and the outside theatre stage. There is a family camping area where peace and quiet is encouraged after dark, away from the full on party that exists everywhere else on site and doesn’t really suit the very young. After many years of practise it seems the festival organisers have thought of everything. However, it is in the unique Kidz Field where the importance and respect paid by the festival organisers to our younger visitors is most marked and remarkable. The emphasis here for this year’s festival is Two Thousand and FREE, a theme dreamt up by coordinator Tony Cordy and his Eventuality team to highlight Glastonbury’s unique free-for-children policy.
I spent much of Friday wandering about, soaking up the happy atmosphere that prevailed in spite of the rain and talking to a collection of smiling adults who share the single intention of giving their young customers a happy Glastonbury.
