One World Stage
This information relates to Glastonbury Festival 2003
So you’re looking for an alternative to the big acts? Open minded, but feel like dancing? Well the One World Stage, previously know as Jazz World, can be your sanctuary between the rock and the hard bass of the Pyramid and the Dance Tent. This year see the return of some favourite performers from recent years, Jazz Jamaica played one of the outstanding sets last year, and gained their place in the stage’s history books by getting several thousand people skanking in what can only be described as a “righteous fashion”. The return of Nitin Sawhney is also welcome as he provides us with the perfect synthesis of Asian sophistication, hip jazz melodies and a bucket full of soul and funk, or Moloko and Morcheeba who both created similarly rapturous responses appearing in 2000 and 2002. One of the most joyous sets of last year was from Lamb as they slammed the crowd with their inspired combination of brutal grooves and fragile melodies – one appearance not to be missed. There are also a few notable debuts here as well – well debuts in a manner of speaking in the shape of prog-rock super-group YES, Tex-Mex alt country cats Calexico, the boom-bastic drum onslaught of the Dhol Foundation, the delicate Brazilian delights of singer Joyce, or the highly virtuosic and entertaining jazz singer Clare Teal, and last but by no means least, the awesome Norwegian drum and bass jazz trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer playing his biggest ever UK gig – this is as wondrous a year as any. With the seductive voice of Buena Vista Social Club’s Omara Portuondo closing proceedings the One World stage will be serving up a banquet of the spiciest musical flavours, just make sure you take a big bite.
