Michael's Sunday Press Conference

29 Jun 2003

Michael Eavis began his last day press conference at noon under a blazing sun in upbeat mood, the music ever threatening to subsume his soft voice.

"After 33 years, we’ve got it right," he said, with all the modesty of a man who has worked very hard for years to achieve something worthwhile. "People have taken all the messages."

The streams and rivers are less polluted, crime is down (only 221 reported crimes by this morning) – there's less of everything being reported and the numbers of people attending the festival are fine: "My personal feeling is we’ve got enough people here already," said Eavis, asked if he would increase the number of tickets for sale next year.

"I don’t have a problem with the spirit of the Festival," he said. "Things have changed but we’ve got a lot going for us now. Everything worked for us; weather, security, everything."

As the press swarmed in around him, Eavis backed away slightly from the wall of microphones. "It’s getting like Silverstone in here," he joked.

He acknowledged that, because of the feeding frenzy that occurred around the sale of tickets, there were a lot of people who missed out this year, many of whom had been coming to the Glastonbury Festival for years.

"We’re trying to put a database together for all the people who really want to come but couldn’t get a ticket," he said. "My heart tells me that everyone who wants to come should be able to… at least every other year."

Pressed on the issue of next year's line up, Eavis smiled seraphically and announced that there were three headliners next year, one of whom will be Prince. "He actually promised me he’d do it next year!" said Eavis excitedly.
