Glastonbury - The Feature Film

29 May 2003

Coming soon to a screen near you . . . it's Glastonbury Festival, the Movie. And YOU could play a big part in its making.

Work will soon begin in earnest on one of the biggest projects in the 33-year history of the festival, a full-length feature film documenting the story of three decades of the world’s biggest and longest-running alternative festival.

It's a fabulous story that's just been waiting to be told - but it wouldn't be complete without some input from some of the millions worldwide who have helped make the festival the massive event it is today.

That's why the film's makers have issued an appeal for YOUR stories and YOUR memories from any one of those 33 years, preserved and captured on film. They want to look at any type of moving image, from personal testimonies on hand-held cameras, to super-8 reels, video diaries – even unfinished 35mm epics.

And there's a bonus: the film-makers will license, credit and pay for anything used in the final film. So it’s in your interests to send the stuff in!

The film will be directed by Julien Temple (The Filth and the Fury, Pandaemonium), with backing provided by the organisers of Glastonbury Festival in association with Roothouse Nitrate and BBC Film.

Julien already has over 150 hours of contemporary footage shot by himself and ten dedicated film crews throughout night and day during last year's festival. In addition there's a stack of archive footage of the festival's ever-changing guises, from 1972's trail-blazing ‘Glastonbury Fayre’ through TV news and features, and unseen performance footage.

But the film-makers believe that the most important parts of the Glastonbury story are still out there – with YOU.
“I’m very excited by this appeal and the material it might bring to light,” says director Julien Temple.

“The Glastonbury film should be made by its audience, it's vital they should be a part of it.”

John Shearlaw, one of the film’s research team, says everyone involved in the project is excited at the possibilities that lie ahead.
"This is a major project – a real feature film, not just a TV documentary. I'm sure there's masses of unseen archive out there, some of which could be real Glastonbury classics. So let’s get it out into the open."
