Ooh la la - French rap!

Dance Tent - Sunday

When it comes to pop, with the exception of genius Serge Gainsbourg, the French don’t excel at it. But Le rap français (French rap to you and me) is altogether a different kettle of fish – if done well, it can be pretty damn good. And French rap, which often takes in interesting African elements, doesn’t stop with MC Solaar, the don of the genre.

Saian Supa Crew are five MCs from the “ghettos” of Paris, so they tell us. They give us a nice intro about themselves in English, before launching into a barrage of brilliantly executed super-fast French rap. To my shame, my degree in French is fairly useless here – I had difficulty catching just one or two words and understanding them.

Nevertheless, it made for fantastic listening, and in no time at all, they had the Dance Tent’s sweaty crowd eating out of their hands. In fact, hands were very much in the air throughout, particularly on the impressive Soldat, which we all sung along to. It all just makes me want to go on a short-break to Paris after I leave Glasto. Magnifique!
