Mint Royale
Minted
Dance Tent - Friday
Having progressed from previous Glastonbury performances as record-spinners, Mint Royale took to stage as a fully live band. Although different from their Dj and production work in that the set they played was their own material, it’s easy to see how they have developed. The beats remain as broken, funky and full of character as they always have been, a testament to the sustained musical relationship between founders, Chris and Neil. Set highlights include the play-list friendly “Sexiest Man in Jamaica” and the new single, “Blue Song”.
Speaking to them, it’s obvious that their interests are as wide as ever. Forthcoming appearances include most major festivals: V2003, Creamfields and T in the Park. At the same time they are working their way through a plethora of summer Dj appointments: Manumission, Boutique and New York’s Bar 13. With all this touring, obviously they aren’t finding much time to get in the studio and begin recording the new album. Despite this, Neil remains optimistic that it will be released early next spring.
In terms of Glastonbury involvement, Chris is as keen as ever. He fully supports the ethos that’s being embodied: “They [Michael and Emily Eavis] have got exactly the right balance between commercialism, music and culture. I first came here in 1991 and have seen the changes over the years… The efforts that have been made to halt the problems of fence jumping and pollution really seem to be working for this year.” Although Neil has decided to head home later today, Chris is sticking around to check out Royksopp, amongst others.
