The Egg

Glastonbury, quite contrary

Lost Stage - Friday

An initial crowd of mostly thirty-something Egg fans had been gathering both inside and out the Lost Stage tent preceding their appearance early on Friday evening.

The four members of the band, including the Scott brothers Ned and Maff, were dressed in long-sleeved black t-shirts, each bearing a silver numbered beat of their favourite time signature, 1, 2, 3 and 4.

With an annual appearance almost as regular as the Ozric Tentacles, theirs was once again in one of the lesser-known areas. This didn’t stop a surge of younger music lovers being drawn to their funktronic sounds.

They started with some more upbeat numbers from their first album, Albumen, accompanied by one of their trademark films consisting of short looped sections running on the projector screen above them.

These were followed by slower, more vocal tracks from Travelator, with additional lyrics fit for the occasion; “Glastonbury, quite contrary” and “If King Arthur had half a chance he’d be here” amongst them.

The final tracks were almost improvised, new material provided by a bevy of knob twiddling and drumming on an overtime rate.

The band had the Lost Stage packed. People were dancing on the slopes outside until well after they’d left the stage. If King Arthur had been given his half-chance, I’m sure he’d have been experiencing The Egg.
