The Others

The Others Rock The New Tent

New Tent - Saturday

If you have never heard of The Others then it’s hardly surprising. After all, their debut single ‘This is for the poor’ was rather cruelly kept out of the top 40 by McFly and the Millwall FA Cup song in May.

But from today’s intense, mosh-tastic performance it is easy to see why they are one of the capital’s most hotly tipped bands. Following the good old rock and roll tradition of getting annoyed about something and making a racket about it, The Others’ particular brand of raw, shouty rock went down a storm with the small but perfectly formed crowd in the New Tent.

Frontman Dominic Masters is The Others’ main asset. Throughout the set he twists and writhes across the stage like a Tasmanian devil who decided to give up the whole cartoon thing and join a band instead, occasionally stepping to the front of the stage to shout a chorus with so much passion you get the feeling he actually really means it.

With a searing, heart-pounding performance the band dubbed the "most worshipped new band in Britain" by NME quickly won over an audience determined to purge all thoughts of penalties and Swiss referees. Crowd-surfers tumbled over the barriers like autumn leaves as the New Tent responded warmly to every number.

The Others present a perfect antidote to the slick commercialism of most mainstream rock bands – just listening to final number ‘This is for the poor’ makes you want to not just stick it to the man, but rip his head off and do unpleasant things down the hole as well. From this truly impressive performance, it seems likely we will be hearing a lot more from The Others.
