Local whippersnappers Once Under offer New Wave Punk in the 4ft Fingers vein. Skate rock with wonky wheels, a ray of sunshine and far too much energy than is good for the guts at this time of the morning.
Their blend of chunky slobbering riffery and tuneless barks for vocals, courtesy of mainman Luc Gulliford, suffers from a bass-heavy sound though and is essentially plodalong, unsurprising fayre. “Nothing Like Me” and “Welcome to Mudsville” chug along in time-honoured Green Day-isms with a touch of Wildhearts grebo chic, but it’s all good clean fun and they’re even wearing smart shirts for the occasion. After all, mum said that they might get on telly.
Once Under are clearly local heroes and today’s set is hugely significant for them so it’s pleasureless to be hard on them, but with so little originality or true vigour to offer, it’s impossible not to, but we can blame it on foolish youth. Bands such as this are evident in every venue in the land and Once Under are just as disposable and easily forgotten.
For today though, they’re a nicely chewy, medium-spicy breakfast. Just like a Pot Noodle in fact. Cheap, filling, synthetic-tasting and not terribly good for you at all. Just want we want on the first day of a festy, really.
