This information relates to Glastonbury Festival 2003
For some Glastonbury is all about the music but stray beyond the safety of the main arenas and explore the weird and wonderful delights of the outer limits of the festival and you will come away having discovered a whole new world of entertainment. Spend just one day in the Cabaret, Circus and Theatre areas and you will witness more theatre, comedy, cabaret, dance and world-class circus acts and a whole lot more besides than a year's worth of trips to the West End, as you experience an almost unparalleled variation on the meaning of human creativity and sheer physical daring. Spread around three fields the wealth of talent is almost overwhelming but in that sense there is almost certainly something for everyone's taste – and some things that go far beyond taste! Dividing your attention between three distinct zones you will be faced with many dilemmas of what to see and when – the potted guide here can only serve as forewarning of the wealth of acts performing. In the Glebe Land Theatre Field you will find the 1,000-seater Theatre Marquee, a proper "black-box" theatre with top-notch sound and lighting – in the middle of a field. Open from 11am every day this venue will be host to some of the festival's most eccentric performances that range from outrageous theatre to sublime dance, spoken word and poetry brought to you from all corners of the globe.
What used to be called the Outside Theatre Stage - in 2002 it became the Dance/Fire/Varity Stage and now in 2003 has reached it pinnacle as the newly named The Dance/First Stage. A crucible of talent this melting-pot meeting-point will host the massive rhythm tribes such as Carnival Collective and Rhythm Wave as well as a variety of stunning displays of international dance styles including Samba, Flamenco and Breakdance. One of the outdoor highlights of this area will be the amazing Fire Show, which is a truly wild must-see event – giving Saturday night fever a completely new definition! Presented and produced by the incredible External Combustion Saturday night's performance will be nothing short of spectacular – while Friday and Sunday will see more restrained displays. Playing host to some of the finest and funniest comedians on the planet will be The Cabaret Marquee, which can hold an audience of up to 2,500, this will be another destination where you will be spoilt for choice. The Circus Big Top plays host to more amazing performers from across the globe, bringing their incredible death-defying acts together for three days of madness. Acts will feature everything from breathtaking aerial displays, ladder-trapeze, extreme juggling and diabolo acts, BMX bike stunts from Australia, escapology and much, much more. Last but by no means least is The Performers Corner that will feature everything from a cappella singing chefs, water-skiing, cocktails, dance and glamour in micro-proportions – and then some!
