Green Kids Glastonbury 2004

Glastonbury Festival Green Kids area, sited on the back half of the Greenpeace field, will be open from 8am till 9pm each day. All activities in the Green Kids field are free of charge. The area is made up of a children’s performance marquee, a children’s art and craft marquee, smaller craft tents, outside activities, and the Ship Climbing Frame. There will be activities and events to amuse and entertain children of all ages and a café and picnic area provided by Cat In The Hat for food, snacks, and a quiet place to sit. There is an enclosed toddler area where you are welcome to be with your very little ones. This year we are also introducing a children’s health information and discussion stall.

For children age 5 and up we have the amazing Rainbow Warrior climbing frame. There is also an Arts and Crafts Marquee running daytime workshops of creating, making, painting, run by the Yeovil Scrapstore and their wonderful helpers; and Mad Hatters, who will be doing painting sessions around the area which you are welcome to join in with. Costumes, flags and processional things can be made to wear on the spectacular procession on Sunday afternoon. Everyone is welcome to join in. Other crafts around the area include pottery, chalk carving, felt making, and Aboriginal pole painting and creating a wish tree. See the notice boards in the area for specific times for all of these workshops. Beside the Oak Tree we welcome The Fairyland Trust - conservation for little people - including wand and wing making, teaching us all about woodland conservation; and a “bird-box project” where you can make bird-boxes to take home with you.

There will be a Camera Obscura, where you can come and admire the world, the festival and the marvels of simple technology. We also have a team of face-painters, and cooperative and environmental games every afternoon by Dynamix. The Skateboard ramp will be at the front of the Greenpeace field. Beside the café and the toddler area will be a picnic area for families to enjoy a bit of time together. Be entertained by the occasional passing walkabouts including The Green Man, Tatty the Clown, Wishworks, and Gemcatchers. Sometime Soon Theatre will be acting St George and the Dragon outside each afternoon.

Come and try your hand at this - for all you budding D.J’s on site - Barney and Marcus are running D.J. skills and Dance Music workshops on Friday and Saturday mornings between 10am and 1pm in the Kids Performance marquee. The workshops are open to anyone over 12.

For those that love drama, performance and stories, there is a daily programme of theatre, clowning, puppets and circus shows. Each morning we are starting the day with a yoga session with Liza for everyone (under 10’s need to be accompanied), in the Performance Marquee. Performers in the Marquee include the wonderful clowns Mr. Pineapple Head and Gemcatchers; and Mr. Brown’s Pig puppets and Vagabondi Puppets, and the T-Cup Tellers of Irish Folklore stories. The Wishworks Show will entertain us after the procession on Sunday afternoon. Each evening and regularly throughout the day storytelling will take place in the marquee and around the field. We will finish each day of activity with storytelling by Calvin and Bill and friends.

Parents are responsible for their children at all times during the festival. However, sometimes people and children get lost so beside the ship at the top of the field is a Lost Kids Tent. The staff of the Lost Kids Tent can provide help and information for any child who is lost or for any adult who has lost a child. The tent will be open from 9am to 6pm. At other times if you have lost a child (or if you find a lost child), find a steward who can direct you to the 24-hour on site lost kids/welfare system. We will also be selling biodegradable nappies at cost price.

Beside the Lost Kids tent will be a health stall – a place where parents can get information and discuss issues around children’s health – including the immunisations debate, mobile phone masts, the food we eat, and choices in childbirth.
