“The sun is going to shine out of Jack Shear’s a**hole. We will make it so.”
That was Ana Matronic’s promise to rock a rainy Glastonbury to its dyed roots. They set about the task with the cheek, sass and joy of an eight-year-old.
This eight-year-old had recently raided the dressing-up box, going by the look of the band. Late ‘60s hippy chic to match the glam groove, aided by some excellent old-school psychedelia on the big screens. They stomped and pouted, to the delight of the Scissor Sisters faithful. Not since the Black Crowes have we seen the like.
Between the tunes, we were treated to some filthy chat… “Lemme hear it for sex in tents!” is one of the only quotable ones. Suffice to say we were left in no doubt about what “Rock my spine” is about after the Glastonbury set. Returning to the eight-year-old metaphor for a moment, Scissor Sisters delighted in the kind of inter-song chat which would make your friends’ parents gasp. One moment where this cheekiness worked at its best was when they asked us to introduce ourselves to the person next to us. It was just like being back in church for the Sign of Peace…
Where they really came into their own is in those filthier moments, funnily enough. The rest of the time, it was clear that the elements were going to conspire like manipulative parents against their New York sass. But then, as Ana pointed out, “Mud is a state of mind…”
