Chris Franc’s Da Lata have been on the hotfoot since the recent release of their new album ‘Serious’ with a new vocal edge to their sound, extending his farsighted fusion of Brazilian samba grooves and sublime songwriting, but the live act is heavier, funkier and just awesome.
Their debut LP “Songs From The Tin” showed the world that Franc knows his stuff as a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer, yet the new album, “Serious” sees him spreading his wings to encompass a wider world of sounds. Starting with what can only be described as their one ‘hit’, “Pra Mana” sets the tempo for the rest of the set. With its sublime samba undercurrent Franc and crew wanted to get the crowd’s booties moving and instead of saving it for later the resulting batucada (group percussion jam) was as needed as that extra goal in last night’s England game. Coupling this to a more ‘dance’ feel last night’s excesses were soon forgotten in as the band kicked up a gear.
After a stunning guitar spot from Franc, it was drummer Tristan Banks’ turn to take another stunning break of polyrhythmic brilliance, before leading another emphatic batucada. Closing with ‘Serious’ the rolling Afro-beat garnered more cheers as Da Lata proved that they’ve evolved and that their creative tank is full to overflowing.
