ACOUSTIC TENT

Hushpukena

Hushpukena are an eclectic mix of influences and musical styles. Try to imagine Gil Scot Heron, Tom Waits, and Nick Cave backed by Little Feat playing funky Salsa and dirty Blues, and you might be close.

The band consists of:

David Migden, lead vocals, trumpet, keyboards. David writes all of the songs with arrangements and concepts from the band.

Joe Gibson, guitar, vocals. A disciple of Ry Cooder, John Martyn and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Graham Mann, keyboards, trombone, percussion. Multi instrumental musical genius.

Graham Brown, bass guitar. Think of Larry Graham and Bernard Edwards.

James Sedge, drums, percussion. Zigaboo Modeliste meets Jim Keltner.

Hushpukena will entertain you like few bands can, you will be swept along with their stories, your feet will move to their grooves, you may even shed a tear or two at David’s heartfelt lyrics.

The band is currently recording their debut album with Joe Leach at the Cowshed Studio in North London.

Note for a Child

Note For a Child are a duo based in Cambridge, England. Strong world-music rhythms, subverted dance beats and hooky grooves create a canvas for genre defying and heart breakingly beautiful songs. There is an irresistible marriage between poetry, vocals and atmospheric soundscapes. Susie Beattie and Daniel Goodman have voices that form a distinctive dynamic, and they have been compared to Peter Gabriel, Daniel Lanois, Bjork and Suzanne Vega.

Their sampler EP and the debut album have been awarded 10/10 in Cross Rhythms reviews:

"This is one of the most original and inspired recordings I have heard in ages…If there is any justice this pair should be getting huge exposure as their writing has a beautiful poignancy." CR Sept/Oct '03.

"The EP was of such towering quality, the full album is every bit as gripping… delicately fuses world music rhythms with ethereal vocals… eclectic yet coherent…new haunting streams of invention." CR May/June '04.

Note For a Child are Susie Beattie - vocals and keyboards - and Daniel Goodman - vocals, guitars, drums and programming. They perform as a duo or, in larger venues, as a seven-piece band.

The band have been performing in the UK since summer 2003, at events including the Cambridge Folk Festival, and at the South African Embassy and the Brighton Centre. They continue to gig locally, in Bournemouth and in London, and are booking festival dates for 2004 (www.noteforachild.com).

Susie, a Cambridge-trained doctor, formerly headed a five-piece band, Chimera, as singer/songwriter, producing two independent albums between ’97 and ’00 to positive reviews. The band performed at Greenbelt, the Cambridge Folk Festival and regular local venues, in addition to supporting Delirious? on the Cambridge leg of their tour.

Daniel was born and raised in Guinea Bissau and Senegal, West Africa, where he was saturated with the sounds and rhythms of those countries, complimenting the strong European and American musical influences from his parents (Daniel's father, Tony Goodman, used to be the front man for 'Out of Darkness'). A graphic designer by training, he has written prolifically and a number of his songs have been recorded live in Bournemouth on the two albums- ‘Simply Said’ and ‘Shelter’. He is a highly experienced performer - vocalist, guitarist and drummer. Daniel is responsible for all the artwork and design involved in the band's promotion.

The pair started writing together informally in late 2002 when Daniel moved from Bournemouth. Note For a Child was born in Jan '03 when Susie stopped GP’ing to concentrate on the music.

Impossibly Beautiful is their debut album, released December 2003.

"Refreshingly vibrant, atmospheric…different…a whole new musical experience." Blair Crawford, Producer, Wave FM.

"Where do I begin? It's rare that you listen to music that really touches your spirit every time you put it on." Hennie Marais, New Wine Conferences.

"I find 'Impossibly Beautiful' absolutely delightful. In the midst of all I'm hearing, this is great stuff." Kevin Prosch.

Note For a Child have been promoting their music independently. The album is produced under their new label, Truenorth Arts; they are actively seeking a distribution deal.
