Tucked away, almost hidden in a corner of the Green Futures field is the Permaculture Gardens. The what? Well I must admit my own concept of the word was hazy at best as I approached the entrance to one of the festivals best-kept secrets. I left with an education.
Rather than simply being a set of horticultural guidelines, permaculture is equally a set of ethics, a philosophy and a way of living designed to reduce to zero the human drain on the environment. “It’s about understanding natural systems,” explained Mike the garden’s coordinator. “If we take out more than we put in to a system it doesn’t work.”
Mike’s motto is “Earth care, people care, fair share.” You might be forgiven for thinking that it all sounds like a bunch of tree hugging hippy crap, but Mike’s argument contains an internal logic that is hard to resist. “If we learn how to use biological cycles and appreciate diversity and beneficial relationships we can meet all of our needs locally”. It is as much a template for human society as it is for having a plentiful garden.
