Groovy Movie

The particularly groovy thing for me about the Groovy Movietent isn’t the fact that there are so much more than simply movies on offer; it’s the way it is powered.

The projector, sound, lighting and even a few laptops are all run on electricity produced from a 500Watt solar photovoltaic array sitting on top of a truck out the back.

In a conventional system, back-up power would most likely come from mains electricity. Not at theGroovy Movie, they’re far too groovy for that. Supplementary power comes in the form of a rather bizarre looking four-person tandem, known as the “Rinky Dink”. It can generate 200Watts of power and I’m assured there is no shortage of willing volunteers. Apparently the rumour that the sound system gets louder the faster you pedal is completely true. Certainly the crew have no doubts about being able to run the whole weekend using just the sun’s energy and a constant stream of enthusiastic (some might say gullible) cyclists.

The outcome of this worthy venture? Well, for starters there are cartoons, anarchic alt-news from SchNews, four new shorts from the Undercurrents team, bands, DJs, all manner of audio-visual malarkey and…wait for it…a movie.
