Hugh Cornwell Interview

Hugh Cornwell admits: “I’m a virgin!”

It’s surprising that very little attention has been paid to Hugh Cornwell’s appearance at Leftfield, as this is actually not only the first time he’s played Glastonbury, but the first time he’s even been here at all. We had an opportunity to chat briefly with Hugh shortly before his set.

So, first time eh?

“Yeah, I’m a virgin!” he reveals. “I’ve never actually been invited. I’ve never been as a punter either, I’m a complete virgin. Intact…I’ve been to Somerset before though!”

Who’ve you seen so far today?

“Well’ I’ve just really been hanging around here,” he gestures, pointing towards the backstage office. “I caught a bit of Groove Armada as I was coming through and I liked that.”

Any surprises in the set tonight?

“Well, er, there’s a mix of Stranglers stuff and my own stuff. I’m trying to subliminally get the stuff in there, you know?”

Oasis or Macca?

“Of everyone, I think people are probably expecting less from Paul, so I reckon he’ll probably be the most impressive because they (the crowd) are expecting less, you know? He’s a real seasoned performer, like. He’s got a lot of energy these days.”
