I had not seen Susan Mckeown perform before todays appearance on the acoustic stage. She has since become my 'pleasent surprise' of the weekend.
Remanicent of Joan Baez and Sandy denny, Mceowns stage presence was as vibrant as it was genuinly moving.
Her voice truly is an instrument. She has perfect control of pitch and dynamics, allowing for great expression of a songs lyrical theme. She sings of life, death, love and hate, peace and war.
Born in Dublin, and now living and playing regularly in New York with her band The Chanting House, Mckeown breaths new life into traditional Irish Music. Her musical approach was described by Time magazine as "the kind of music that will link Ireland's musical past with its future."
Today the crowd were treated to songs from her five studio albums (which have only been released in the US so far), as well as some traditional folk reworkings.
