From Philly to Glasto
This page is provided only for information, it does not apply to the 2002 festival.
Having toured almost constantly for the best part of a year straight off the back of their most recent LP Philadelphonic, today G.Love and Special Sauce returned triumphantly from their base in Philadelphia to perform not one, but two sets at Glastonbury.
After Eagle Eye Cherry dropped out at the eleventh hour, G.Love and Special Sauce filled his spot on the main stage and made the sun shine.
I caught up with the Philadelphians at their sheduled set at the acoustic stage this evening. With the eponymous G.Love (Garrett Dutton to his mum) on guitar/vocals/harmonica, New Orlens born Jeff 'Houseman' Clemens on drums and Jimmy 'Jazz' Prescott on the upright bass, their heady mix of country, blues and hip-hop traditions all tipped off with a generous dash of sauce was the perfect accompanimment to a lazy hazy Glastonbury evening.
I caught up with the Jeff Clemens after the show (when I accidentaly opened a portaloo door on him) and he told me he was lucky to make this gig having just taken a seven week sabatical to recover from tendonitus in his wrist.
The Houseman also revealed that the band will be back in the studio and working on their fith official studio album soon.
G. Love and Special Sauce have over 150 original songs to choose from for their set, so no two gigs are ever the same. Tonight they mixed the old with the new, their more known songs with their less known and finished up with a cover of the Beatles You've got to Hide Your Love away.
They'll be back for their third slot this weekend on the Jazz Stage tomorrow evening. This surely has to be one of the hardest working bands here.
You can find out more about them at their website www.philadelphonic.com.
