Whinge Part Three

And so I'm off again, getting hungry now, Let's see what the Greenpeace Field has to offer. I'm looking for something tasty and wholesome but never get there, as I'm distracted by The Tunnel. For those not up on things; The Tunnel is, erm...a tunnel running underneath the old train-tracks and linking the Greenpeace field to the Green Futures field on the other side. But there is a difference; you wouldn't get very far advertising it as a feature if it was just a tunnel. It's actually an art installation. At first glance you just see a tunnel with a brightly tiled floor, graffiti on the walls and speakers running down the sides. When you step inside, however, things change. Hidden underneath the tiled floor dozens of pressure sensors are linked to a computer driven sound device operating on a probability matrix.

Walk through the Tunnel and the unique weight of your footsteps on various sensors produces a seemingly random yet warm cacophony of sounds, incorporating orchestral sweeps, traffic noises and many more I couldn't pick out. If one person walks through they may not actually trigger anything or perhaps only traffic noises, there is no set pattern of sounds and different trips through will create different arrangements. The brainchild of Rolf Gehlhaar, Andrew Shoben and Sabine Tress of Greyworld (visit their site at http://www.greyworld.org), they are understandably proud of their creation. They have just had a 6 week installation at London's Hayward Gallery as part of the Sonic Boom Exhibition, operating on the same principles. They're hoping for a more permanent inclusion in the festival, which would be no bad thing as it's not just another interesting diversion but a worthwhile feature. And surely that's what makes Glastonbury the festival it is.
Now, if you don't mind, I'm going to go and have something to eat. My stomach is making more noise than the sound rig at the Dance Tent.
