Saturday Sun

This page is provided only for information, it does not apply to the 2002 festival.
I'm now insistent (it being Saturday night) that I'm going to 'Do Glastonbury' for at least one evening. It seems that so far all I've seen is the inside of a portacabin, I want to see some loonies and have a jig. So I go to see Death In Vegas perform a dark, evil, and worryingly moody set (and I mean that in a good way), they rocked. Half a bottle of Smirnoff inside me and I'm rocking as well. When, eventually, the only act I had made a point of definitely not missing -Leftfield- arrived on stage I was well up for it. The overall impression of their set, I have to admit, was C+ (could try harder). They had a packed crowd and they just didn't work it like they could have. A notable highpoint was 'Song For Life' which raised everybody's hands and made us all scream like teenagers, but the rest of it seemed, well...flat. I saw Leftfield play in Brighton in 1995 and the energy of the set and the crowd made the roof of the venue rattle around like the lid on a pan of boiling water. Unfortunately this didn't happen tonight. Ah well, we all have our bad days. Now looking for a party, we head for the Kodak/Energy24 stage. Two wide-eyed faces on banners either side of the stage and a message underneath the DJ stating simply 'Better Than You Think' form an impressive looking setup. The rig's quite punchy as well and there's lots of people here getting right into the spirit of things. Fantastic. We stay for a while but we've got bigger fish to fry, we want a cup of tea. We explore every corner of the Green Fields looking for a party and find a few, stay for a while and bugger off again. Anybody got a can of Stella for sale? After leaving a tea tent thrashing out dub reggae we decide to make our way back to camp. On the way back along the old railway line I notice a tent pitched down in one of the ditches running alongside the tracks. After Thursday these ditches become mass urinals for the inconsiderate and the lazy. Tiptoeing carefully down the embankment I poke my head in and enquire:
Er, hello. Glastonbury Website. Got time for a couple of questions? 'Well we're not exactly going anywhere are we?' Right, Ok. Just wanted to let you know that you're camped in a ditch. 'Thanks, we're aware of that' So can you smell the river of piss running underneath? 'Excuse me?' People can't be arsed to wait for the toilet so they pee down the side here. You're in a toilet, my friend. (Face drains of colour) 'Ew' Yes. 'So you think we should move?' Well you're not going to have many people coming down here to try and rob you. 'Good point, we'll just stay here shall we?' Whatever works for you, mate. And I leave them looking incredibly confused and bewildered. It's their first Glastonbury and they're going to have to throw their Eurohike tent away at the end of this. Oops, sorry. And with that I retire to my tent at around 4am to ponder the curious Glastonbury phenomenon of folk shouting 'Bollocks' across the campsites and around the stone circle. These youngsters... I'm still smiling though.
