Rolf

It was expected that a few people would turn up to see Rolf Harris but as it happened a few thousand people turned up to see him; in fact the crowd reached all the way from the stage, out through the tent, into the field and down to the hedge. In other words it was bloody packed.

"ROLF, ROLF, ROLF" yelled the crowd as Rolf's Didge player Silver Bear warmed them up and then the man himself takes to the stage. Clad in a silk suit jacket, Rolf really looked the part as he launched into a set of favourites and cover versions like you've never heard them before. His version of Never Met a Girl Like You Before has to be seen to be believed. A new song, Fine Day, is performed for the first time and it could have been written for this gig; it is uplifting, optimistic and euphoric, everything the Avalon Field is about. And people were throwing their pants at Rolf; in fact he had a pair hanging off his microphone stand.

Waltzing Matilda followed by The Irish Rover and Two Little Boys built the crowd response to a level where is was in danger of drowning the P.A. and as for Stairway to Heaven; well, enough said. The plight of indigenous Australians and the destruction of Australia's rainforests is highlighted as the band launch into sunrise and then.....Rolf Harris leaves the stage only to be summonsed back again to perform one more song, after which he declares "This is the best gig I've ever done in my life". No one who was there would disagree. Rolf Harris is a deity of entertainment, of that there can be no doubt.
