Announced by stage manager Chris Tofu Citizen Fish enter stage left to raptous applause from the mohawked and dread locked crowd who have shunned the likes of Willie Nelson, Muse and St.Etienne for an appointment with a group who have been entertaining festival audiences and spreading political awareness for the best part of two decades; as Culture shock, The subhumans and now Citizen Fish.
Dick, Jasper, Phil and Trotsky have the reputation of being one of the best live bands in the country and tonight's performance only enhances this. Talk about tight; you couldn't slide a blue rizzla paper between them!

Performing songs of their latest album Active Ingredients as well as from their extensive back catalogue Citizen Fish soon have everybody jumping around except the stewards who are busy handing out cups of water into the near crush of people at the front. Singer Dick never one to miss an opportunity to spread the word talks about the new psyicatric laws and the band launch into Back To Zero. The fight back against repression is subject of Sink of swim and animal rights are on the agenda for the song rabbits. People sway, people dance, people crowd surf and at the back the uninitiated stand around like Fish out of water (well it had to be used somewhere).
|
The up tempo ska punk set seams to fly by and before the crowd have a chance to catch a breath Citizen Fish are off then back on for a triumphant encore. They may not sell as many records as some bands but if success were measured in integrity and quality of performance then Citizen Fish would be at the top of the Barrel.
