Headliner Wows the Saturday Crowd
|
John Martyn comes on to a good audience in the Avalon Stage tent. He has the look of one of those blokes that always sit in the same place by the bar. The music begins in a lollopy folk way with a nice slide guitar. Not much of a beginning, but Martyn doesn't need to, he leans into the microphone, projecting a range of voices, pasted together, from a gruff Tom Waits-like tone to the higher end of Eric Clapton.
The next tracks are a good step up. The pulsating back line are strong both in their repetitions and deviations, building with some distortion from Martyn into a more complete sound. Martyn pulled off a good set but the synth work did a bit of damage to the scheme of things. It was a bit too high in the sound mix and at times dominated far too much.
John Martyn has a good critical reputation, this was compounded by the set, but it was slightly static, slightly lyrically weak and ever so slightly disappointing. Pickyness aside, it was still amazing, the crowd loved him. The good thing about the minor stages is that if you do get a big crowd, it usually means they're fans of the act; this was definately the case here - good stuff.
