The Cardiacs
This page is provided only for information, it does not apply to the 2002 festival.
It's one of those facts of life that things don't always go as planned and tonight The Cardiacs have been struck by a double whammy. Firstly they have had to go on minus bass player Jim and secondly the P.A. is playing up. Unphased by these things, Cardiacs front man Tim Smith takes to the stage and assumes the personna that that has made a cult figure out of him over the last eighteen years. Winking mesmerisingly at the mass of fans who have crammed themselves in the tent he launches into the first number. Attempting to describe in words how The Cardiacs' sound is a bit like trying to describe in music how apple pie smells. However to say that they have a Zappa-splattered guitar-heavy punk progressive avant gaurde stance would be a good attempt.
Within two numbers the crowd have been whipped up enough to neccesitate extra stewards being placed stage front to prevent the barrier collasping as a seething mass of people become entranced by a band who have always shunned the mainstream, retained their integrity and risen to becombe one of the best kept secrets in the British underground.
Blasting through a set of classic songs, Tim pulls shapes and contorts his face in a manner that would scare off any Indie kid who has strayed from main stage. This is a real performance, not some record company-contrived pop star ego trip. The scary man in the suit and topcoat has yet again proved his worth!
