Earthtribe Interview

This page is provided only for information, it does not apply to the 2002 festival.
So how long has Earth tribe been around for? This is something we've been doing for about 8 years; we spent 3 years in the studio and the last 5 years we've spent giging. I think we've probably done about 500 gigs so far. How would you describe your sound? Our style of music is best described as ethno cyber funk. We also do this thing called Sitar Funk, which is a club in London. Basically it's one of the most successful Asian underground clubs aroundand it's staying underground. If you look at the first 50 Anookas you'll see us on every flyer. There wouldn't have been an Asian Underground with out Earth Tribe. You can tell by the music where the vibe came from. We played the most gigs in the early days, but now some people have been forgetting about us because certain people are in the limelight now.
I take it that comments directed at Talvin Singh then? People like us, Joi, Asian Dub Foundation, we were the pioneers of the sound. Well Asian Dub Foundation and us both played our first gig on the same day and in the same place.. at the Ministry of Sound. It was a great place to start off. We played in the little room they played in the big room. We had one person when we started, by the time we finished you couldn't get in or out of the room. From then on we knew we had something. The third one we ever did was Womad Festival, which was at the Whirlygig tentsame thing happened again. We were the only people over the three days to totally ram the tent out. That was when we knew we really had something. Is it true you've never been to the festival before? We're Glastonbury virgins. We've been trying to get something at Glastonbury for 4 years and this year we didn't bother and some how here we are. The highlight so far has been doing the gig man. Picking up the good vibes from all of these people out here and it's just lovely. Hunky Dory.
So what's been the most memorable thing you've seen at the festival so far? It must be the 10ft giant that stepped over my car on the way in. Yeah. What have you got lined up next? Were doing a charity gig in Coventry soon for Thalesemia, which is a blood disorder that affects certain people in the Asian community. We do a lot of work for that to spread awareness. It's quite an important thing for us. So are staying around for the full duration? Were probably gonna stay through out now. I don't knowwe've played out so we kind of feel like freeloaders now, were just hanging around checking it out It's a great festival man; people should come down here and check it out for themselves.
