Matt Black: Interview

This page is provided only for information, it does not apply to the 2002 festival.
So you are? ........ Eating? Yes, I am eating...mmm...green peppers and coconut curry. I am Matt Black, DJ entertainer from Coldcut. So what are you up to at the festival then? At the moment I'm here having a really good time. We decided not to give it a large full Coldcut thing this year. So I'm just doing it a bit of DJ-ing around the place; Gaia Space, Greenpeace..The Rizla Tent. So yeah, I'm here with my trusty V-dub camper, the ultimate festival accessory. So what are Coldcut and the Ninja Crew doing at the moment? Well we've been pretty busy. It can be difficult to slack out when you have to be on the cutting edge of things and trying to do new stuff and also run a small business. We get slack occasionally, but that's an inner space, so we're keeping busy with some software development, the Coldcut show, the new Coldcut album and trying to keep everything under control. America has just taken off and the Ninja mission for global domination will continue at a slack pace. You've always been politically active through your music; do you want to tell us about that? Coldcut are active politically, in our music and our media, and I totally think that what we make can have a strong political meaning to it. People ask us "Can music be political?" Just look at the fucking history of music.... Do you know what mean? I think it's important for music...well our music anyway, to have some content to it. So although there's a lot of joy to be had from a banging dance track...it's pretty well catered for by a lot of people. I do want to do some straight up dance stuff, but I want to add that content to it, to give people something to latch onto over and above the excitement of the production of the sound. Really, these days it's about the right samples and BPM. So what is the next step? With the 2 bits of software developing we are preparing to spawn the conversion of the disk jockey into the digital jockey. Vinyl as much as we love it, isn't going to last because there are other ways of dealing with the music directly. I mean when you can put your hand down on a surface and scratch effectively and do all of things you can do with vinyl, plus have the power of digital technology, then things are ready to go up another octave. That could well be the next step for dance culture. It's quite difficult now to make good music that sounds different. A lot of the styles and accommodations have been explored and as I say, it's all about BPM now. It doesn't go much below 60 and it doesn't go much above 200, which is pretty much the range of the human heart beat. That's probably just as well then really? Well yeah..I mean if you were exposed to a BPM of over 200 too muchyour fucking heart would probably blow up. So what's been your most surreal experience at the festival so far? Well today I had a hundred-foot long snake nearly run me over. That was pretty wicked. Oh and two large ladies with false appendages and stilts. What does Glastonbury festival mean to you? Well this it's been completely good. The first one I came to be sunny and great, but I didn't have enough experience. The second one it rained like fuck but we still managed to survive on Bongo's double decker bus. This one has been good all round really. You don't want to give too much up to the weather on controlling your happiness. I've been up in the kids field all afternoon in quite an exalted state. You know when people go off about "yeah that's a really lovely energy man"; the kids field is the definition of that. The wonderful things people make for the kids and the workshops they do, the stilt walking and all of the adults are on their best behavior. Everyone was just making the maximum effort being nice, it's all reflected in a very nice way. I totally enjoyed that and I just wish my son could be here...maybe next year.
