BENTLEY RHYTHM ACE
For as many times as you've cursed the crap licensing laws in Britain, you can thank your Queen Vic at least once for Bentley Rhythm Ace. Bentley Rhythm Ace was a direct result of 1997's moody musical climate - Spiritualized and Radiohead had the big albums at the time - and the UK's early chucking-out times. "We couldn't carry on drinking after 11 o'clock, so we'd go back to the flat and get more and more drunk," explains Richard March, who together with Mike Stokes, makes up one-half of the band with the adolescent giggle-inducing acronym. "We'd switch on all this recording equipment and see what terrible racket we could make at four o'clock in the morning." That terrible racket was the sound of their eponymous debut album, of which more than 110,000 fellow beneficiaries of booze in the UK alone have purchased. Two years on, BRA is back with a brilliant new album (For Your Ears Only), some funhouse props and the trademark cartoon antics, so never mind last call - get over to the Dance tent and let Bentley Rhythm Ace sort you out with some boings, bleeps and intoxicating beats.
MINT ROYALE
To say Mint Royale are diverse would be an understatement:they've remixed both Terrorvison and Daphne and Celeste, wrote the theme tune for the back-slapping Zoe Ball vehicle "The Priory", and are responsible for last January's best summertime record, "Don't Falter" (featuring ex-Kenickie frontwoman Lauren Laverne). They've released records on Skint's Under 5's label, worked with Apollo 440 and Younger Younger 28's, and produced some of Bentley Rhythm Ace's latest album. Norman Cook and Steve Lamacq are fans. Neil Baker, one-half of Mint Royale, runs Manchester's Faith and Hope label, while Chris Baker is a graphic artist in his "spare" time between recording, remixes and gigs. They're pop, they're big beat, they're indie, but above all, Mint Royale are FUN. Ditch the labels and preconceptions, and get down to the front.
ALPINESTARS
In February 1999, Glyn Thomas and Richard Woolgar were presented with a challenge: put together a live set for Manchester's uberclub Homo Electric - in less than a week. It's hairy under any circumstances, especially when you aren't actually a band and haven't really written any songs in the traditional sense. Undaunted, Glyn and Richard got to work, putting on the finishing touches on with just twenty minutes to spare. The result was a thrilling hour of loungetastic electrosleaze, a monthly residency, and a record deal. Alpinestars was born. Since then, Alpinestars have released three EPs on Manchester's Faith and Hope label, supported Death In Vegas and Doves, remixed Elastica's reworking of "Da Da Da", and have a debut album due this summer. Hotly-tipped to be one of 2000's dance darlings, Alpinestars seem destined for great things. Watch this space.
