 A Rather Unusual Circus...
|
I have just stumbled across possibly the strangest thing I've seen all festival. I am convinced I'll go back and try to find it again and it won't be there. Stumbling from the Ozrics gig over to the Jazzworld stage, I came across Arnold Frenzy's "Strangely Compelling" Flea Circus. Yes folks, I kid you not, there's a genuine flea circus at the bottom of the Avalon field (so all the itching was nowt to do with sunburn after all!) Decorated with gaily-painted boards bearing their name, the "Big Top" tent also has a Flea News board outside, informing us of the latest flea sex scandals, as well as, somewhat morbidly, the current death toll ("93 DEAD, 41 DROWNED, 1 LOST"
). The cloth-draped doorway is guarded by an Arab sporting sunglasses and fez.

"Come in, come in!" he says with a grin, charmingly inviting and a little sinister
The customer is ushered inside the dingily-lit marquee to try to catch a glimpse of one of the famous fleas. A perfect, tiny circus arena is spot-lit on top of a table. The great Arnold himself is eulogising about the next performer, a beautiful hi-wire unicycling lady flea, whom we are told needs lots of encouragement as she's a bit scared of heights
A scantily-clad female assistant brings out a tiny box, from which our starlet is plucked with the aid of tweezers and placed on the hi-wire
The audience is hardly daring to look as she teeters cautiously across on the unicycle
Will she make it?! A cheer goes up and we all breathe a huge sigh of relief as she reaches the other side. Arnold is in a frenzy, brought on by so much excitement and the survival of one of his leading ladies... The sudden realisation that I'm watching a flea circus in the middle of the night in a tent in the Avalon field brings on a craving for fresh air and a stiff drink, so off I go.
