Mark Thomas' opening gambit is already being lapped up as I tardily make my way to the fringes of the Speakers Forum Tent. I'm not entirely sure what he's talking about, but it hardly seems to matter. Mark is in a relaxed mood. He frequently allows himself to get carried along by whimsical asides. "I'm rambling. I'm dressed for it as well". He may have dropped the word 'comedy' from the title of his television show, but when it comes to gags he just can't help himself. As he reminds us, "You can take the boy out of the clubs

Anyone who has seen 'The Mark Thomas Product' will already be familiar with much of what is discussed. The International Development Fund and the Export Credit Guarantee Department, amongst others, again find themselves in his sites once more as Mark urges us to follow his example and cause a little irritation in the corridors of power. "If you own a share in a PLC you are entitled by law to see the salaries of the board members. Call the Company Secretary. Tell them I sent you". Even his disclaimers are just alternative ways of egging us on. "I'm not suggesting that you do this," he tempers a one point with a wry smile.
He is preaching to the converted of course. Spontaneous applause breaks out at the end of several of his appeals. Mark knows he is amongst friends. The Q & A that wraps up the set is food and drink to him. Not that the man doesn't know his stuff. Far from it. He has a ready response for all comers and is particularly convincing when summing up on the fine balance between maintaining the traditional appeal of Glastonbury Festival and ensuring security. "If it means a festival free of drug dealers walking around in balaclavas then it has to be a good thing".
