 Mendip Agrees to Issue License
At a committee meeting of the regulatory board of Mendip District Council the decision was taken to approve the application by Glastonbury Festivals for a Public Entertainment License. This decision was taken at 11pm on 27th January 2002. It now looks more certain than ever that another festival will take place on Worthy Farm this summer between the dates of Friday 28th June to Sunday 30th June 2002. The site will be open to the public from Wednesday 26th June.

The regulatory board of Mendip District Council has taken a decision to approve Glastonbury Festivals application for a public entertainments license. This means that it is more certain than ever before that a festival will take place between Friday 28th to Sunday 30th June 2002.
Running Europe's largest music festival is no small undertaking. For everyone else it may have been a year off in 2001 but for the organisers it has been one of the hardest years of work yet. All who have ever been to Glastonbury will have been amazed that such a spectacular, complex and truly huge event can take place so smoothly and without serious incident.
The most important message now for people to appreciate is that fence jumping will just not be possible at this year's festival. Security will be heavily upgraded and the fence will be over 3.5m high with anti tunnelling measures and an overhang to prevent climbing. More importantly it has to be recognised that coming without tickets will jeopardise the future of the festival. Every person who attempts to gain entry to the festival without a ticket will be hammering another nail in its coffin. It is not unreasonable for the local people of Glastonbury to expect the event to go off without anti social behaviour caused by people marauding in the area trying to gain illegal access or camping in the area illegally. Those who try will be met with a massively increased security response and all attempts and measures will be taken to deter people from remaining in the area. Obviously specific details will not be discussed in the public domain, but those who try will be disappointed.
This web site will announce when tickets are available for sale, where to get them and what the cost will be. It is certain that this will be excellent value for money for what is arguably the largest event on earth. The entertainment will be of the same international standard as usual with as well as the main stage artists, there will be the highest quality performances in the dance tent, theatre and circus fields, acoustic tent, green fields, jazz world and many more arenas bringing the most diverse range of contemporary culture to the temporary Somerset city that is Glastonbury festival. The good news is that Mendip District Council has approved more tickets than ever before to be allowed to go on sale and 105,000 people will be able to come and enjoy the festival.
The whole future rests on there being no repeat of 2000 which led to the prosecution of Michael Eavis for breaches of the licence and safe number of people allowed on site. Michael Eavis is risking jail if prosecuted again, but by making this application but he has shown confidence that people will pick up the message that the days of fence jumping are over. However if 2002 passes without major incident the future of the festival is guaranteed for many years to come. There will be more information about these issues, artists, and safety information posted on this web site in the coming months.
