 King of Slam

Funny and angry, Luke Wright, the king of Slam performing in poet's corner.
|
Luke Wright, newly crowned King of Slam in poets corner at Glastonbury should be writing this review himself. His bitter, funny, cutting collection does more with words than I could ever do. He's young, bold and brilliant and I think the best thing I can do for him is to shut up and let him speak in his own write.
Brits abroad (excerpt)
Life's so easy when it comes in a package
Don't forget your toothbrush and some union jackage
To work on foreign relations you learnt in the sun
So drink twelve pints of lager and kick off at the hun
Grooved up and greased up - the slutty and the tarty
Wohay! We're going to Ibiza and we're gonna spoil the party
It's just a sign of ignorance and the respect they can't afford
The girls and boys behaving badly cos they're the brits abroad
Bog standard food costs more at Jamie's (excerpt)
There's naked ambition in the bbc kitchen
Gary's hit the rhode and delia's bitchin
There's a prat on tv who loves his gran
Salt of the earth with a mockerney twang
This demi god who's well in with wella
All the girl's think he's a right dishy fella
You can just see him driving the lambretta round sainsbury's
And bog standard food costs more at jamie's
And, that, believe me is complimentary in comparison to "Stop right now thank you very much" a tribute to a certain former Spice Girl
You're an ill bred brain dead ill fed Ilford slapper. . . . etc

Ian McKenzie spitting it out in poet's corner.

Moving swiftly on; Luke belongs to a band of new age beat poets based in Norwich. They call themselves aisle16 and have a 5 strong core who are all well known in the poetry scene. Others to look out for are Ross Sutherland, Paul Joyce and gravel voiced Ian Mckenzie who is responsible for titles like "girlfriend", "girlfriend part 2", "the girl who couldn't yawn" and this
Prince of Wales Rd (excerpt)
I'm lovin' it, lovin' it, lovin' it
Lovin' it like that
I'm clubbin' it, dubbin' it
Herman D Wubbin' it
I'm Budweiser bottlin' it
And dancing like a twat
A special mention here to Sara Wingate-Gray who gave me all the info I wanted in hushed tones and written notes in between performing her own work. And also to a young man called Joel Stickley who has the intelligence to see Post Modernism as the biggest cop out since margarine. Find them all on

Say no more.
