 The Gandinis

Ten years ago Sean Gandini paired up with Kati Yla-hokkala from Finland and started what is now an international troupe of ten jugglers, the Gandinis. Hot from Buckingham Palace and the Golden Jubilee show they arrived here at Glastonbury last Wednesday to embark on a pretty exhaustive three shows a day itinerary, interspersed with sharing their skills in the circus tent. There are only four of them here; they travel and perform all over Europe and take turns to minimize wear and tear.

Together, Sean and Kati choreograph a fusion of rap, tap, balls and clubs with some breathtaking inter-group juggles that left me not knowing who had whose balls, where they were going or who they had come from. It was, spectacular. They start off with a mathematical juggle-rap, tapping their feet to make a rhythmic background beat and rapping sums in time with throwing balls in sync. That's three different things all in one go. I can juggle three balls, with difficulty and it usually gives me a headache. I can't chew gum at the same time and if the phone rings it's all over. But today, I sat in the crowd at the theatre marquee and felt so inspired by the sheer brilliance of the dexterous display before me I decided to go home and practise until I am good enough to run off with the circus.

The Gandinis tour all the time. If you want to catch up with them visit their website www.gandinijuggling.com for info on future performances.
