Glastonbury's youngest enjoy the sun in Greenfields
As an alternative to the Kidz zone down by the theatre field, Greenpeace have provided their usual wholesome brand of entertainment for the young in the Greenkids area, tucked away in a cosy corner of the Greenfields. Today it was stuffed full of tomorrow's artists, musicians and pirates-with-a-conscience as our youngest visitors learned that fun is entirely possible without causing too much damage.
I watched a bunch of small boys diligently putting together bows and arrows using wood, turned in a traditional pole lathe, always under the watchful eye of a man I can only refer to as St. Hugh. Hundreds of clay sculptures baked in the sun at the reusable model workshop and the admirable Community Resource Centre based in Yeovil provide a multitude of recycled magical materials for making things. Collected from manufacturers throughout South Somerset the centre motto, Cheaper, Cleaner, Better is a valuable lesson for everyone - and the sooner it is learned, the better we will be.
Trampolining, safe play for the under fives, an empty (thankfully) lost kids tent, mini wigwams, sandpits, chalk boards, a kiddy theatre and a very parent friendly café all fit snugly into a closed corner of the festival site with only one way in and one way out. It's safe, fun and abundant with life's simpler pleasures.
