TN016 - BOOKENDS EP

Designed by Andy Votel & Alfie
Photography by Rich Mulhearn
Released 7th August 2000

Alfie's following Bookends EP, with it's loosely painted rainbow on a weathered and fragile slightly flaking wall, developed from an image and idea Ian Alfie had had floating in his mind for sometime.

Ian was after the mood of an old and undiscovered, perhaps even stone age era, painted rainbow on a rock wall inside a cave. This idea itself did not emerge from any the lyrics or song themes, just from something he felt suited the mood of the four tracks.

Unable to find a cave, Alfie at one point went to the top of hill in Mossley and painted a rainbow on a large suitably looking weathered rock, but not everyone was happy with the results.

For a while the front sleeve was going to be friend Lisa's illustration of the child reaching up to the top book on book pile. In the end this appeared on the inside sleeve and on the label, but also makes a return on the album.

The rainbow on the final sleeve is one painted by some of Alfie and Andy Votel on a pretty knackered wall upstairs in Night & Day Cafe Oldham Street Manchester. No one is entirely sure if it's still there. Ask Jeni.
