TN011 - EP 1

Designed by Andy Votel
Released February 2000

The Alfie 'coat hanger' logo first made it's appearance on the sleeve for Alfie's debut EP 1. The inspiration behind it came from the 'Ooze A Lullaby' track. The music's mood, with it's music box motif and sleepy feel, suggested to Andy perhaps a 'home made mobile' gently swaying above a small child is it drifted to sleep.

An idea at the time, which extended from this, was for the following three EP's to each pull back slightly from this initial scene. Bookends would be the room with the bed. The EP that would become Montevideo might be a view from outside the bedroom window, while the album could be a view of the whole house with the coat hanger mobile just visible though a window. In the end, and for no particular reason, each sleeve ended up loosing this thread of thought and different approaches developed for each release.

The logo is in fact a dabbled with photo of a model made with a full size wire coat hanger, string and letters cut out of balsa wood - the texture on the letters is that of the wood grain. The final simplicity and beauty of the image hides the problems involved in taking the a photo with the letters swinging and yet not turning sideways - something finally achieved with various additional threads of cotton controlling the movement.
