Flaming Lips
Sunshine guaranteed
Pyramid Stage - Saturday
Forget the Polyphonic Spree! What an unforgettable entrance from Oklahoma’s finest, The Flaming Lips. Just like the Spree, they know how to fill a stage with people.
Known for their previous use of extras dressed up in animal costumes on stage (this included a fur-clad Justin Timberlake on a recent Top Of The Pops appearance), a large portion of animals straight out of Noah’s Ark seemed to appear. Meanwhile, frontman Wayne Coyne came on flanked by two, er, inflatable sunshines – pronouncing that the Flaming Lips bring the sunshine with them wherever they go. Shame one had problems keeping inflated!
With various video montages in the screen behind them, the Lips played tracks from 1999’s acclaimed The Soft Bulletin and last year’s Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots; the crowd were soon reassured that this band have got the songs to back up such a silly stage show.
Coyne is a born showman, pouring fake blood over him, entertaining the masses and encouraging singalongs. Funny to think dancing elephants and bears were the warm-up for Radiohead, though! And a shame there were no badgers up there!
