Brendon Benson

Brendon Benson Bliss

New Tent - Friday

Hailing from Detroit, Brendon Benson has the kind of voice that would make reading a telephone directory sound cool as; something the assembled masses hanging on his every word is a testament to. Much more enigmatic than the dreary singer/songwriter tag suggests, his particular brand of sultry tuneage make him a perfect accompaniment to the late afternoon summer vibe.

Fantastic melodies wrap around lyrical gems. Extras and harmonies supplied by keyboardist Chris create a more substantial sound. Whipping through most of current album Lapalco, they veer away from textbook note-for-note renditions of the recorded tracks. Instead lashings of guitar riffs, blissful keyboard interludes and vocal variations add appreciated originality.

Mixing anthemic moments with ‘cult’ classic Folk Singer, the downbeat melancholy of tunes like Metarie jar deliciously fuses with the sweet pop of What.

Benson may be somewhat eluding the mainstream at the moment, but with more performances like this, he should be entering the big time soon enough.
